Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is sometimes confused with Halloween, given that they happen around the same time every year and both include symbols such as skeletons, skulls, and connections to the afterlife. While Día de los Muertos is celebrated on the days immediately following Halloween – November 1st and 2nd – this Mexican holiday is far from the spooky, haunting, trick-or-treating holiday you may have come to associate it with. It is, rather, a celebration of those who have passed on by remembering their lives, visiting their gravesites, retelling their stories, and sharing beloved memories. Pictures of the deceased are placed on altars known as ofrendas, which are brightly decorated with marigolds, candles, and offerings such as their late ancestors’ favorite foods. It is believed that the spirits of the loved ones come back during these two days of celebrations to visit their families, and thus, it is a joyous occasion and not a somber event.
