You might remember learning a rhyme taught in your elementary school history class, “In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” Years later, if you’re asked by anyone what year Columbus discovered land on his journey to the New World, and you can confidently say that it was the year 1492, then this little rhyme did its job!
Christopher Columbus’ voyage changed the history of the world by connecting the eastern and western hemispheres. In addition to the sweeping migration from Europe to the Americas, the trade of ideas and goods crossed back and forth across the Atlantic like never before. There can be no doubt that his discovery changed the course of American history forever, which is why it is observed every year, on the second Monday of October, as a federal holiday.
